This Sanjay Leela Bhansali composition is loud and all over the place

The decision to release ‘Aila Re’ as an introduction to the Malaal (2019) soundtrack seems odd. As first songs go, the number, set in a dance bar, focuses heavily on actor Meezaan, who is being introduced in the film, but the song itself is no great shakes.

Composed by producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali, ‘Aila Re’ feels loud and all over the place. The score relies on electronic beats more heavily than previous Bhansali compositions. The lyrics have been penned by Prashant Ingole.

Vishal Dadlani’s vocals, while enthusiastic, don’t suit Meezaan. The Marathi rap portion by Shreyas Puranik is catchy, but Meezaan does not quite pull it off here. The newcomer does seem to have inherited father Jaaved Jaaferi’s dancing skills though.

Malaal, directed by Mangesh Hadawale, also introduces Bhansali’s niece, Sharmin Segal. The film is due to be released on 5 July.
