Smita Tambe investigates 7 deaths in 7 years in a village

With the rise of female protagonists in mainstream Hindi cinema, films with female police officers as the lead have also been made in the past few years. Rani Mukerji’s Mardaani (2014) and Priyanka Chopra’s Jai Gangaajal (2016) are two major examples.

Now Marathi cinema is also joining the bandwagon with Saavat (2019). The film stars Smita Tambe in the role of a tough and no-nonsense police officer.

Written and directed by Saurabh Sinha, the story takes place in a village where seven suicides have taken place in last seven years. But the villagers believe that these are murders carried out by a mysterious force.

They tell Tambe’s character, Aditi Deshmukh, that a girl from their village, Nandini, used to practice occult because of which she was exiled. They believe she is behind these deaths. Aditi later realizes that all the seven deaths happened on the same date as per Hindu calendar.

Saavat has an interesting storyline that gets you intrigued in finding out more about the mystery. The only problem area is its loud portrayals in certain scenes.

Tambe appears impressive in the role of a tough police inspector and doesn’t try too hard. But no other actor is given prominence in the trailer.

Saavat is Sinha’s debut film. He has written, directed and produced short films before.
