RJ Balaji’s LKG stuns trade with third best opening weekend of the year

RJ Balaji’s Tamil political satire LKG, which was released last week and managed to impress critics and audiences alike, has stunned the trade with the third best opening weekend for this year after Ajith’s Viswasam and Rajinikanth’s Petta.

According to trade sources, the film collected a whopping Rs9 crore in its opening weekend in Tamil Nadu. For a film of its budget with no stars associated with it, this kind of opening is unprecedented, say trade pundits.

LKG has appealed to youngsters big time. A day after its release, it was shifted to several bigger screens across multiplexes in Chennai following terrific response.

LKG review: A political satire with its heart in the right place

“LKG is one of those surprise hits which come once in a while,” trade analyst Trinath told Cinestaan.com. “The satire content and memes have worked really well with college-going audiences and the IT [information technology] crowd who are flocking to the theatres like never before. The film has already entered the profit zone and everything it makes from Monday will be overflow for the producer.”

LKG, which also stars Priya Anand, Nanjil Sampath and Mayil Swamy, follows the life of a local councillor and the story of his rise up the political ranks by hook or by crook.

According to Cinestaan.com’s review of the film, “LKG is a political satire with its heart in the right place. It achieves everything it sets out to achieve, emerging as one of the best films in this space in a long time.”
