Anupam Kher’s New Amsterdam picked up for second season

The American television series New Amsterdam, about the oldest public hospital in the US, will return for a second season later this year. NBC announced on Monday, 4 February that the show had been picked up for another year.

Actor Anupam Kher stars on the show as neurologist Dr. Vijay Kapoor alongside Ryan Egglold, Freema Agyeman, Janet Montgomery, Jocko Sim, and Tyler Labine, as the dedicated staff at New Amsterdam who go above and beyond the call of duty to help their patients.

According to a report by TVLine.com, the series averages 6.4 million total viewers per episode and they have a 1.3 demo rating for their first 12 episodes. It is the number three drama on NBC tied with shows Chicago Fire and Chicago Med. The family drama This Is Us is rated first, followed by thriller Manifest.

Kher took to social media to share the news of the renewal. He congratulated his cast members, producers, directors, and technical crew who make the series and noted, “It’s such a brilliant series that celebrates love, compassion and above all, diversity.”

Kher is not the only Indian actor whose show has been renewed. Suraj Sharma is a series regular on the CBS drama, God Friended Me, which got picked up for a second season last week. The faith-based show which stars Brandon Michael Hall is the network’s second most-watched new series after FBI.

New Amsterdam, created by David Schulner, airs Tuesdays on NBC, while God Friended Me airs Sundays on CBS.
